We’ve gone Map Crazy!

Over at our sister blog, essays & effluvia (now, 100% Economics free!) I gathered numerous election map post-mortems. Most of these were just lying around the internet gathering dust anyway.

These graphic representations of the election’s outcome are thought provoking.

Red States Feed at Federal Trough, Blue States Supply the Feed   So much for self-reliance

Where did their votes come from? (interesting 3D comparo)

“The First Thing I Want to Say is, ‘Mandate’ My Ass”

In the wake (or is it “aftermath”?) of the U.S. Presidential election, I’ve been amazed and appalled (though not particularly surprised) at the claim that a 51% to 48% majority constitutes a mandate.

I made a bunch of maps you might like here:

    http://obsidianorder.blogspot.com/2004/11/red-and-blue-reprise-2004.html

I try to show population density and vote by county at the same time for the 2004 results, and compare with 2000.

One point, the simple red-to-blue maps almost always paint an inaccurate picture, because color perception is very tricky. It makes a huge difference what the exact red and blue colors are, and what the midpoint is. America is not purple ;)

I am looking for a reverse map, Since there were over a hundred million people who did not vote. If you took a map looked at the percentage of voters who voted per state or county, compared that to the population of the state or county, you would have a truly interesting map. I know that not all the people who live in a stae or county are registered to vote, however I would like to know where all these non voters live.
