The Parlor Mob - And You Were A Crow (rock n roll, cross between the Darkness music and Robert Plant vocals)
Chris Cornell - Carry On (just good rock/alternative music)
Mar Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath (new album, back to their roots)
The Pietasters (nothing new, but old school fun ska)

Jenny Lewis indeed, and the Rilo Kiley stuff as well. I can't believe how good that band is, and how I keep liking it more. My number one for years now, and I'm a person with 90% of my playlist from other decades.

Arcade Fire has songs that I'm very glad I got to know.

I've taken to listening to some God Speed You Black Emperor as well. It's not for every moment, but would dominate the soundtrack if I had to make a movie about the great lurch of 2008.

Thanks for the blog, it has been an education.

Pop: Really liked Duffy. Maybe Santogold in the right mood.

Jazz: either Esperanza Spalding or Roy Hargrove or maybe Willie Nelson/Wynton Marsalis

Country: Hayes Carll

Classical/Christmas Yo-Yo Ma & Friends

Who would have thought there's another Cut Copy fan around here! Easily my favorite album of the year.
Also liked the new Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound. The song Old White Lincoln has been on repeat.
If you're into electropop (for lack of a better description) Oracular Spectacular by MGMT is amazing. BR - Since you've included Vampire Weekend you might like them.

Bon Iver is the only surprise omission ...

The excellent website Metacritic is quite helpful for exercises like this one:

Nice list, I have almost all of it and the recommends in the comments. There were lots of notable albums this year but nothing has really stuck with me this year. Maybe I picked up too much music...who knows.

"Chinese Democracy" by G'N'R was one of the best releases of this year in its kind. It was certainly well worth waiting 17 years.

I also think Slumdog Millionaire is a great movie. I lived in India for a couple of years in the late 70s and it all rang true to me.
I agree that this movie exposes a huge hurdle for India but I wonder if China is really any different. Or is China just ruled with a more thoroughly organized ruthlessness. After all, the Chinese equivalent of Slumdog Millionaire could not be made.
