But don't forget (in my case) another $370/month for HOA, and for our family, throw in monthly babysitters fees (because both parents work) and in California that's $15/hour *60 per week *4 weeks/month or another $3,600/month. Thank God the realtors told me back in 2004 that in California "no one ever loses money buying a home". (Oh and a $650k house in CA is my case is only a modest townhouse.)
