I got off to a late start working on my annual “different” music list. I have about 10 discs this year that qualify, and I wanted to see what I missed over the last few months.

One thing that surprise dme were the number of discs I went to check out that they were all available in MP3 format at Amazon — 50 Albums for $5 dollars or less.

At the same price, I prefer the physical format — but at $5 and under, the MP3s are a no brainer.

Amazon has a number of promotions going on. One is 25 days of free holiday music in MP3 formats. I downloaded Calling on Mary by Aimee Mann, Midnight Clear by Andreas Vollenweider, Ave Maria by Heart, Coming Home For Christmas w/Victoria Shaw… by Jim Brickman.

And if you haven’t grabbed these freebies, do so:

100 Days, 100 Nights (Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings)

Strange Overtones (by David Byrne and Brian Eno)

Here’s a few highlights from the increasing selection of reasonably priced ($5.00) downloads:

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
David Byrne and Brian Eno

Viva La Vida
Coldplay

Narrow Stairs
Death Cab For Cutie

Vampire Weekend
by Vampire Weekend

In Rainbows
by Radiohead

Sleep Through The Static
by Jack Johnson

One Kind Favor
by B.B. King

Modern Guilt
by Beck

Rockferry
by Duffy

Blame It On Gravity
by Old 97′S

Stay Positive
The Hold Steady

Barenaked For The Holidays
Barenaked Ladies
Price:    $2.99

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour should be added to this list. Cool Copenhagen group.

Hmm, might be worth checking… My desire to look for any new music was severely (nigh mortally) wounded by the whole early 00s period of boy band/britney simpson/numetal, and everything basically sounded like weaksauce versions of better, more original performers…

I mean, if you have Miles, James Brown, Bach, and Zeppelin, who else do you _really_ need? ;)

(then again, recommend _Hard & Phirm_, _Fantomas_, _Dragonforce_, _MC Frontalot_, I guess I do keep trying to find new stuff that doesn’t suck manatee balls..)

Some of my favorite albums of the year from bands I hadn’t hear of at the start 0f 2008:

The Airborne Toxic Event by band of the same name.
    You’re Awful, I love You – Ludo
Only by the Night – Kings of Leon
Evil Urges – My Morning Jacket

Give these a try, particularly if you liked the Vampire Weekend and Coldplay albums.

Thanks for the Eno / Byrne tip, I missed that one.
On a side (but related) note, your freebies link, Barry, point to the EVil Empire (AMAZON.COM), where the marketing whiz think it is ok to force me to create a full account just to download one free song.
I wrote them that they need to learn the definition of free.
I went to David and Brian’s site, and got the song in exchange for my e-mail and zip code.
AMAZON is really starting to show what it really is.
An exepnsive intermediary between me an all the Art out there.

That Bon Iver record is excellent. It was easily my ‘08 favorite. Well worth the $5.
