Look who’s asking for $5 million of TARP Money:

Is the porn industry up next for a bailout?  If porn titans Joe Francis and Larry Flynt have anything to do with it, it will.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, the titans of pornography are begging for a bailout. Joe Francis, creator of the “Girl’s Gone Wild” video series, and Larry Flynt, founder of Hustler, will ask Congress for a $5 billion bailout, according to TMZ.

Why does the porn industry need a bailout?  Because apparently even porn is getting smacked by the recession.

According to TMZ website, Adult DVDs (and by Adult, we mean XXX) sales are, well flaccid. DVD sales are off 22%.

    Must … not … make … “too big to fail” joke… must… not…

  2. VoiceFromTheWilderness Says:

You can count on Larry Flynt to make a political statement disguised as self-serving foolishness — that’s sort of the point.

  3. sinomania Says:

Bailout won’t help – time for a new business model. Xtube, YouPorn, et al, have ended the porn purveyors’ monopoly!

  4. leftback Says:

I hope Hank Paulson doesn’t boob again on this one , especially after all the previous cock-ups.

Barry, you have come up with some hilarious stuff lately.
I hope you gave Lawrence Yun of NAR the business. Top economic forecaster, my arse!

  5. leftback Says:

What do you expect Barry? – we are in a BARE market… nyuk nyuk

Predictable pullback today in the bear market rally.

I was net short overnight and sold my FAZ at the close. I reloaded with some favorites; COP VLO GDX SLW and AA. Holding some QID overnight, but expecting a rally off 905 tomorrow – or at worst a revisit to 890.

  6. mlomker Says:

@leftback, sounds like you are playing it well. I was expecting a reversal around 890 in the morning.

  7. Pat G. Says:

Why shouldn’t they ask? The government has opened up our piggy bank to all these clowns. This is all going to end terribly bad!

  8. msaroff Says:

I think that they should just become a bank holding company.

They could give out something much more interesting than toasters to new account holders.

  9. Steve Barry Says:

Another low volume day…30th straight for QQQQ. 10 day put/call picked up a bit and is just now getting back to previous 52 week low. This is a perfect short opportunity. I said two weeks ago we would get major earnings warnings after the New Year and we got the white whale…Intel.

  10. timken Says:

Hey, if commercial RE get bailouts to support their erections, why not the porn industry as well?

  11. DC Says:

Are these leading or lagging indicators?

It makes some sense that fewer girls are going wild — Daddy’s Visa is running on empty so goodbye Lauderdale at Spring Break, which means fewer drunk girls for Joe Francis to capitalize on.

This is somewhat offset (as earlier pointed out) in that Daddy himself is spending less on porn thanks to YouPorn.

As kooky and kinky as it sounds at first, there’s no reason to leave something as fundamental as the skin trade out of the economic calculus. Hell, Sir Charles got busted last week while lookin’ for a beej — and he’s loaded. That must mean something, though I’m not at all sure what it is.

  12. Steve Barry Says:

Anecdotally, Billionaires are offing themselves and India now has an Enron type scandal in Satyam…short these bastards.

  13. DL Says:

They need to figure out a way to make the case for a systemic failure if they don’t get the money.

How a series of economic dominos will fall.

And we must ask ourselves, who is more deserving of a bailout, Rick Wagoner or Larry Flynt?

  14. sinful mistress Says:

Money more thoughtfully and better spent. What about TARP funds for the pot growers?

  15. gloppie Says:

What this market needs is discipline. Get down on your knees.
And yes, Paulson needs an enema too.

  16. Jojo99 Says:

A Hummer in every garage says Flynt!

  17. wunsacon Says:

    Transor Z….LOL! !

  18. Concerned American Says:

Why do you think I am a concerned american? LOL

  19. Bob A Says:

You remember that hologram they had on CNN on election night?

Well it’s coming to playrooms around the world in a slightly uh.. different… incarnation…
and it ain’t gonna be that long.

    Viva la internet

  20. beancounter2b Says:

Do you think Hank and Ben will lend a hand?

  21. mark mchugh Says:

Fair is fair. We’re already giving money away to boobs…

  22. Moss Says:

I can’t wait to see the Congressional hearing on CSPAN!

  23. mdesq Says:

Methinks (hopes?) this is a joke.

  24. AndrewBW Says:

I’m sure they’ll get it in the end.

  25. DP Says:

Why do I need to buy porn when I’m getting a good hard daily f*cking by the government as they hand out my future earnings to dead companies and outright crooks? That is the reason nobody is buying porn…

  26. DP Says:

PS: I’m amazed nobody made a “stimulus plan” comment, particularly as that is the title of the article two posts before this one :)

  27. ben22 Says:

funny, I read all the comments and not a single person seems pissed about this. I am. It’s total BS but I suppose I could just make a joke about it and move on.

  28. Dr. Kenneth Noisewater Says:

    Troubled
    Waggling
    Asset
    Trust?

  29. batmando Says:

TART = Troubled Ass Relief Trick?
I could use one of those, at the very least, one, for my sorry ass, but then I think we’ve all have already been tricked first time around by TARP.

  30. batmando Says:

Oops, seems carries, and I’ve caught, the comma STD, Socially Transmitted Dyspunctuation(?), from MEH, eh?

  31. batmando Says:

    oops, missing the TBP…
Oops, seems TBP carries, and I’ve caught, the comma STD, Socially Transmitted Dyspunctuation(?), from MEH, eh?

  32. Mike in Nola Says:

At least they produce something to keep all the unemployed busy. Probably a good investment in social stability.

  33. Mark E Hoffer Says:

batmando, that’s funny, though, better pixels than warts, no? ; )

  34. dead hobo Says:

Speaking economically, there are few barriers to entry in this industry. Participants can enter and exit at will. Product differentiation is infinite. The industry has a broad diversity of niche markets, both heterogeneous and homogeneous. On one hand, the industry might use self reliance to relieve it’s problems. But this is the low cost option. The demand curve for goods and services appears to be shifting down and to the right but the industry is broad and deep, with the potential to scream and gush if properly stimulated.

I don’t think $5,000,000 is enough give this market a good rise.

  35. Ole Drippy Says:

I read somewhere the porn industry was bigger than all professional sports combined. I just hope, once they get the money, it doesn’t get snatched away…

  36. mark mchugh Says:

    Everybody’s a fucking comedian………..
