It was quite sporting of the authors to wait until the endnotes to make the rhetorical link between the Austrian School/supply siders and Mao/Stalin.

I love the bullet points. If I can get out of paying my mortgage, life as a government employed ballroom dancing instructor has a lot of appeal. And the 30% increase in social security benefits is a sure winner given today's demographics.

Im not sure how much more of a new deal america needs right now. it seems that people just want to see a monumental shift, where the govt gets involved to protect them from all threatening aspects . Whether it be health insurance www.nyhealthinsurer.com for individuals or the self employed. Or from bank failures, insurance failures and the collapse of the auto industry. We help not handouts

Wonderfully informative - good choice for posting, Barry. FDR's critics have been legion over the last generation but Auerback does a good job refuting many of the positions held by monetarists. A public works job is still employment. The '38 downturn was caused by reversing fiscal activism. Spending on goods and services gets more bang for the buck than tax cuts. Etc. Dogmatic conservatives have never given FDR his due. Hopefully, the current administration's response to this crisis will spark a dialogue to reconsider the facts of the 1930s.

telling, to me, anyway, is that after this: "Marshall Auerback is a global portfolio strategist for RAB Capital plc, a London-based fund management group."

no mention is made as to RAB Capital's "success", or not, w/ yon' Auerback's input.

though this: "The Federal government can make sure that state and local governments do not lay off a single worker or cut back a single existing program, thus avoiding big losses to communities and enhancing the capacity of local government to fight recession. Add emergency revenue sharing to states and cities by picking up increased shares of Medicaid, (which has suffered drastic cuts in eligibility and coverage), and enables states to restore Medicaid benefits to more people, thereby furnishing some general household budget relief. Have government temporarily pay most of the cost of COBRA coverage for laid off people who lose their health insurance, and allow people over age 55 to buy into Medicare."
--Auerback, above

should be seen w/this:

"As a recent report in the Washington Post notes, Medicare actually pays the vast majority of bills it gets from any company that has a federally-issued supplier number. The audit systems now in place focus on overbilling and inappropriate medical treatment rather than detecting fraud, observers note. One example of this is the case of Rita Campos Ramirez who, using only a laptop, filed more than 140,000 Medicare claims for unnecessary equipment and services. Campos Ramirez, who has pled guilty to filing false claims, has since helped prosecutors win indictments against doctors and patients who accepted kickbacks for pretending to receive HIV infusion services...."

as but, singular rebuttal.

the fallacies contained in this tract are, rather, too numerous. also, his incessant leaning on James (K.G.), only serves as sad reminder that, to our loss, James is not John..
