Lost in most discussions of terran evolton are the assorted asteroid hits that pretty much wiped the slate clean 3 (?) times. So there’s actually not a good linear progression from the original set of tiny single-cell ocean beasties to post-asteroid plants and animal life to dinosaurs to post-asteroid mammals to primates.
Had not those asteroids re-set stuff practically to zero (never quite to zero) multiple times, who knows what would have evolved from the original set of micro-organisms.
Pretty picture, but I have a hard time reconciling it with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irreducible_complexity; Sorta like a pretty picture of how the financial system ought to work in theory, but then in practice, whoa, we discover systemic risk and black swans… so we reach the conclusion we need to design a better system.
While yesterday's US stock market close was poor, Asia and Europe didn't follow today as debt in Greece, Spain, Portugal, etc... rallied, their CDS narrowed and stocks bounced. The Greek finance minister said January tax revenues came in above expectations and that spending was below target for the month and said "that means the deficit reduction for January is well within what we have promised." The euro is rising in turn. Also helping is the story that Trichet is headed to the European Union leaders summit a day early in order to address Greece's problems even as the Greek finance...

I don’t see in the cycle where this generation has taken us back to the beginning. Something is missing from the cycle.
