Site Down For Servicing

You may have noticed over the past few weeks that the site has occasionally been glitchy. “Node unavailable; Database Inaccessible” and other error messages have cropped up.

I am having my programmers make the site inactive for a few hours to run diagnostics. This means we are in Read Only mode — there will be new no posts or comments for the next 8 hours or so — and then we will come back online.

Some of this has to do with the increased population (traffic, users, comments and search queries).

Given the number of posts and comments, I wonder if we are butting up against a natural limit for WordPress.

Anyway, back in a few hours . . .

Comments

Please use the comments to demonstrate your own ignorance, unfamiliarity with empirical data, ability to repeat discredited memes, and lack of respect for scientific knowledge. Also, be sure to create straw men and argue against things I have neither said nor even implied. Any irrelevancies you can mention will also be appreciated. Lastly, kindly forgo all civility in your discourse . . . you are, after all, anonymous.

    Harry you are not on this board trying to add anything constructive, you use inane remarks that spark unnecessary controversy, you start arguments yet do not back them up, most of your facts amount to you saying “I have said it for months” or some such drivel.

    Over the past few months I have learned a great deal about a great lot of things and have seen some pretty good arguments go on, and although I doubt many minds are changed through these arguments, the arguments are laid out in well thought out and factual ways and this helps stimulate growth of mind. Your agreements only stimulate your over blown view of yourself.

    I have never ONCE heard any of these people – NONE of them say this or that will happen, they say what they see in their tea leaves and let others make up their own mind. You come on here stating “I have made a lot of money for a lot of people” “The indices will lead the way” “we are in for a 20% rally” This blog has many highly intelligent and skilled people, who actually know what they are talking about, yet every time I see you post I feel the overall IQ of the blog drop by 20%

    So I feel proud in telling you

    When you say the site is down, BR, exactly what do you mean?

  8. Wes Schott Says:

  10. alfred e Says:

    @BR: Your site host sucks.> Period.

    What, you’re managing trillions and can’t afford a decent host?

    Well yeah, welcome to NY.

  11. Bruce in Tn Says:

    Barry,

    You mean if I want to trade in the old site for a brand new, energy sipping model, that will make coffee for me in the morning, and scratch the dogs’ ears, that I have to wait?

    Don’t I get any of the Cash for Crashers money? (CFC)….I’ve been waiting months….

  12. Barry Ritholtz Says:

    The host is Rackspace, whose track record and reputation is outstanding.

    I wish I had your talent.

    Masterful.

    You are a master at art, a master at observation, a master at commenting, and, perhaps a master at baiting.

    Agree, Rackspace is awesome. One of my long term holdings. I think it’s your wordpress set-up that might be causing the hiccups.

    @f420 – bravo for standing upto HW. Btw, I haven’t seen your brother lately. Did your parents ground him?

    On other news, Indian economy is growing at a brisk pace. More evidence for decoupling?

    @BR: Actually the problem may lie with some of your subservient feeds.

    cdn.eyewonder seems to be on vacation quite often when it’s time to reload/refresh

    The price you pay for advertising revenue.

    Thanks for the new “non-smoking” ads.

    I suppose it’s OK if that’s what it takes to stay dialed into a great blog.

    ~~~
    BR: I haven’t seen that before. Its pretty weird.
  16. Barry Ritholtz Says:
    Part of the problem is sheer size:
    Hopefully the database update will clear a few of these things up
    As to the advertising, well, I promised my wife that the blog would not be a giant monetary sinkhole (I’ve been told that the job of a boat).
    So far, I’ve spent $1,000s more in out of pocket costs (design, programming, hosting) than the site has generated. But the switch to Federated Media some time ago caused advertising dollars to really skyrocket. Its on a long delay — about 4 months — so the revenue should really kick in Nov 1.
    I already have plans to add a few interns, editors, and graphics folks. Perhaps another conference in the spring, and the occasional contributor dinner.
    The idea is to keep improving what the site offers . . .
  17. alfred e Says:
    @BR: Well hey, you’re a big dog by virtue of this SUPERLATIVE blogspot. (hat tip CV for inventing caps)
    Hopefully your wife will understand you have to spend money to make money.
    Someone owns that Ferrari in the parking lot.
    May as well be you.
    BR says-
    “I already have plans to add a few interns, editors, and graphics folks. Perhaps another conference in the spring, and the occasional contributor dinner.”
    and this-
    “I promised my wife that the blog would not be a giant monetary sinkhole”
    contradiction?- or do all those folks work for free :-)
    keep up the good work Barry
    BR: You have the order backwards; the promise was first, THEN the advertising $, then add a few interns, editors, and graphics folks
  19. dead hobo Says:
    Advertising feeds have nothing to do with the delay. Sorry, BR, but I use an extremely effective ad blocker and never see any ads on this site, yet my delays were substantial at times. As you, I suspect a database problem.
  20. bergsten Says:
    @DH — “extremely effective ad blocker”? Do tell.
  21. investorinpa Says:
    Perhaps a post about making money on financial blogs is in order!
    @ dead hobo – 8:57 – I have alwasy been a master baiter, it is perhaps he only thing I am truely good at :)
    Firefox with adblock plus addon. All free and works great. Install and forget. I also like forecastfox – also free. And Keyscrambler, but you have to get keyscrambler from their site. Mozilla doesn’t have it.
  24. Sarge Says:
    Barry,
    More likely a server issue. Since WP is SQL based on the back end and SQL is very robust I seriously doubt that WordPress is the issue. I’ve seen way more posts and comments on other WPO sites with no problem. WordPRess is without a doubt a fine blogging system.
