There are 215 Starbucks within 5 Miles of my Office
Over at kottke.org, jason started a thread about the maximum Starbucks density and Starbucks center of gravity of Manhattan.
It seemed that 165 was the maximum # of SBUX found within 5 miles of your location.
On a lark, I punched in my street address — 535 5th — and BOOM! We have a new winner — there are 215 Starbucks within 5 Miles of my office.

It seems like you are in my hood. As I noted a while ago, we need a purge of Starbucks stores. It’s just too many.

So, starting at one and then advancing to the next, could you make it to every one within a day? Sounds like a challenge for Morgan Spurlock, the guy who did “Super Size Me” and the more recent series “30 Days”. He could capture the whole experience on film and then edit it down to an hour.

And by the way, I’ve got 245 Starbucks within 5 miles of 1251 6th Ave.
Piker.

To all those fans of THGTTG (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), you will be all too familiar with the Shoe Event Horizon. Could it be that Douglas Adams was one of the greatest economists of our times? Will we encounter the Starbucks Event Horizon.
42!

You jus never know when you are going to need a cup of joe.
When my kids were younger and they were all “I want to go to McDonalds” I threatened to take them on a road trip and stop at EVERY McDonalds we saw and make them eat at least one thing – but appearantly there are laws against abusing our childern…. Huh…..
It looks as if a Starbucks CEO needs to be sent on a 5 mile hike through your neighborhood and forced to stop at EVERY Starbucks he sees and order one thing at each store.

And now just about every kid is hopped up on coffee caffeine and emormous amounts of sugar. Some of those “drinks” are worse for your body than a McD’s Big Mac. When I was a kid, our parents would never allow us to drink coffee. Now most kids are doing it. You know, it’s cool to drink coffee in a cafe all day. Who cares what it does to your body?

more proof that the ‘hattie has, almost, been totally Disney-fied..

I was pesting to my wife yesterday that I couldn’t find a cafe, sit outside and sip a Pernod while watching the world go by; she reminded me I was in NYC, not Paris.
Silly me, I should be craving a 1/2 decaf Caramel Macchiato while texting.
On the upside, I did run into Dustin Hoffman, which was quite nice.

Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink….
All those starbux and not one good cup of coffee…unless you like your beans burnt.
Blech…
McD’s is busy putting SB out of business….give it a few years….the only SB that will be left will be in Manhattan, Seattle, Greenwich…..other areas where image means more than substance….

Doesn’t that work out to less than 3 per square mile? That doesn’t seem that bad, but of course many times they are only a couple hundred yards apart…
September 29th, 2009 at 11:16 am
PS….any bodega in the city has coffee that puts SB to shame….
September 29th, 2009 at 11:18 am
not that there are any bodegas in midtown….Rudy made sure anything nonlilywhite was moved up and out years ago….

Now for the real test – how many of those 215 Starbucks have a barista who know what Barry drinks?
September 29th, 2009 at 11:55 am
There’re 113 on my search at five miles, 78 at two miles, by my estimation – and granted, it’s only anecdotal – there’s a dozen within a couple or so blocks.
Dey awtta mention dat to da IOC…

Lo, and the Angel did break the Seventh Seal, and the stores of coffee did rise. And the people did go there and buy coffee and those little biscuits with fruit in them and Police compilation albums. And Satan grinned, for the battle was met. Armageddon had begun.

Just think…
A simple walk down 5th Avenue these days allows you to stroll over the “magical brown carpet” weaved and laid down by the spilled coffee of the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE…
What an honor that must be!

I’m reminded of this:
Starbucks To Begin Sinister ‘Phase Two’ Of Operation
SEATTLE–After a decade of aggressive expansion throughout North America and abroad, Starbucks suddenly and unexpectedly closed its 2,870 worldwide locations Monday to prepare for what company insiders are calling “Phase Two” of the company’s long-range plan.

A greater measure of Starbucks’ market penetration may be the prevalence of Starbucks outlets within a block or two of every high school in your community. Like in my City. Got to get’em when they are young!
September 29th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
What’s the monthly overhead for running one of these Starbucks in your NYC area? $10k, 20k, 30k/month? No wonder SB coffee charges so much! If I were a franchisee I’d be demanding a bigger exclusive area.

Starbucks: a fast drink joint.

I am reminded of a classic clip of the Simpsons… where Bart goes into a mall where every store is a Starbucks, except for one, which becomes a Starbucks just as Bart walks out of it (holding a coffee).

Last time I was in NYC on a brisk March day I was craving a good cup of coffee in a nice cafe atmosphere. I don’t enjoy Starbucks basic brew as it’s too bitter and too damned hot, so I walked 10 blocks up 8th Avenue eschewing 3 Starbucks stores looking for your basic good gourmet brew. My only other choices were hole-in-the-wall bodegas with coffee. I ended up not having any coffee at all. Even in Manhattan, has it become just impossible for a good cafe to compete with Starbucks? That’s just sad, and regrettable for those who don’t like Starbucks coffee.
