Another instant Onion classic:

In what forecasters are predicting will be the largest, most devastating disaster to hit Florida since the national economy collapsed, a Category 5 hurricane neared the Gulf coast this week, threatening thousands of repossessed and long deserted homes.

According to meteorologists, the incoming tropical storm could leave as many as 3 million residents every bit as homeless as they’ve been for the past year or so.  “Those who haven’t already lost everything to the housing-market crash are urged to evacuate their homes immediately,” said Robert Menken, head meteorologist at the National Weather Bureau.

This could be the turn-around that Jim Cramer has been calling for – Florida housing really will be underwater…

  2. call me ahab Says:

if i was a bank- assuming they have insurance for such a disaster- i would get on my knees and praise jesus for the great news :-)

  3. Ny Stock Guy Says:

The Onion also has a nice review of the “new” Beatles music.

Now, if this hurricane would veer north a little and reign devistation on the honorable representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina we would have something.

  5. cvienne Says:

That photo alone is a classic!

It should be the COVER for National Geographic or something…

&VD…Congratulations! Your occasional outbursts (to that measure), on this blog, are the only thing more ‘classless’ than those such as Wilsons…

  6. Wes Schott Says:

    @ahab -

that would finally mark this crap to market would it not?

  7. karen Says:

Is that a real photo? Or something created in an LA movie studio? Oh, and it’s from The Onion…

There’s some pretty good stuff at The Onion. Unfortunately it’s buried in a lot of other crap. So I don’t usually waste time sifting through it to try to find the good stuff.

  10. Thor Says:

God – I missed The Onion reference and thought this was a real story. How sad is that? Both that I missed it, and that The Onion can be mistaken for the MSM these days.

  11. jc Says:

thats one way to reduce the overhang of unsold homes!

I hope the banksters didn’t buy their insurance from AIG!

  15. willid3 Says:

jc you are probably right, they didn’t buy insurance. but it depends. did they keep the junk securities or did they sell them? and how do they keep from having to right them off this time? and how many did the fed get sold too them also?

  16. willid3 Says:

  18. JohnnyVee Says:

I don’t think one can insure a vacant home. That would cause a lot of arson.

  19. VennData Says:

    cvienne,

Great comeback. You must have worked hard on it.

Why not something clever like: Foreclosures… what’s happened to the independent voter’s idea that the GOP media machine is anything but a bunch of angry white men (who missed the rally) …and can’t even abide the idea that their precious ones can even listen to our Commander-in-Chief.

Representative Joe Wilson, simply saying what ignorant people feel.

  20. call me ahab Says:

“angry white men (who missed the rally) …and can’t even abide the idea that their precious ones can even listen to our Commander-in-Chief.”

HAHAHAHAHA- that’s a good one- rest assured- it was probably almost 100% white men that profited from the rally-

you really aren’t too bright are you?

  21. CTX Says:

lets talk about this rally here. Nothing can stop this from going up…. The recession is over! Media is having a field day with this good news….Not a negative word out there! Realistically, what can stop this momentun driven rally? Is there any news due out that could move it South?? This is ridiculous already, 5 days and the nasdaq is at year highs!

  22. karen Says:

ctx, 1044 could stop the rally.. let’s see what tomorrow brings.. at least today was exciting.

“If the market is carving out a high then a small decline that holds 1018 or 1012 could see one more rally up to 1044. Why?

1044 represents a 90 degree overshoot from 1012. This would allow price to move into day 180 (opposition) from the early March low. The daily swing chart shows the trend is strong but the daily swings are becoming shorter in duration. After the August 7th pivot, the S&P Daily Swing Chart turned down (August 11), turned up (August 12), turned down (August 14th), and turned up (August 19th). This kind of behavior coupled with giddy sentiment, irrespective of my shorter and longer term cycles, suggests a defensive position. When tied to the mechanics of the music of the Square of 9 Chart, it suggests caution.”

and this isn’t hocus pocus, btw. i’ve seen it work too many times : )

  23. GregMoon Says:

@inessence — do you think the story will be revised to read “300,000 new OR SAVED BJobs by the end of the year?” And would a saved BJob be as difficult to account for as a saved Workjob? These are the things that tax my rhino-like brain.

  31. bergsten Says:

The story scared the crap out of me (my Mom has a place in FL) until I realized it was the Onion.

On a different note (since somebody already mentioned Obama)…

Our kid comes home on Tuesday night. I ask, “so what did you think of the President’s speech”?

    “Didn’t see it,” he answers.

    “Why not?”

“Our teacher’s TV set is broken.”

I’m pretty sure there’s a moral to this story, or least a bit of irony, but I can’t seem to lay my hands on it. Any takers?

  32. MRegan Says:

I provided the link to offer one chartist’s view of likely trend in the spx. My intent was to share. As far as the future, I’ve no real idea. I am however, taking my gains in some of the Brazilian plays (a few of which I pointed to here- most notably GFA) and I think NVEC is about ready to be cashed in.

I suspect that we will have an ugly turn- consumer credit contraction, CRE defaults, and ALT-A, ARMs distress will push into center stage and harsh the buzz.

  33. call me ahab Says:

  44. Trainwreck Says:

Mr Hurricane, thank you for solving our housing crisis, we thought we would have to help out the homeless, but you are doing an awesome job of getting rid of our oversupply of condos.

P.S. Can you do us a favor and kill all the old people living in Florida? Hugs and kisses, someone that doesn’t give a rat’s ass about Florida.

    Hi CTX,

I’d argue that there is very little ‘good’ news out there, but, when the expectation bar for company earnings, jobs reports etc. is set so low it would be very difficult for any of these reports to not be better than expected. Imagine setting the olympic 100 meters qualifying time at 20 secs. Every lame duck would be able to make it to the olympics. I think we’ve got a lot of qualifying for the olympics euphoria around at the moment.

The spin going on at the moment to keep this rally afloat is quite remarkable but I’ve always subscribed to the old adage ‘never let your own view get in the way of making money’.
