As floyd Turbo used to say....and other thing.....There is a very natural human tendency to assign blame to a discrete entity for every unpleasant occurence, expressed all the more desperately when guilt is in reality diffuse, or say, when the cause is just random madness. The best example of misplaced blame-assignment for the random madness scenario used to be the kennedy assassination conspiracy theorists, but this was recently trumped by the 9/11 truthers, such as those we find in Obamas intellectual circle. The best example of the diffuse guilt scenario is never-ending howling about corruption on wall street and in washington. We hear the yahoos say that those darn rag heads have to take responsbility for fixing their own problems, and in the next breath they blame all the problems at the homefront on Congress. Every time anyone has ever questioned the middle class handouts that are close to the root of our troubles, he has been run out of DC on a rail. After one of these night-riding adventures, the typical yahoo (left and right) immediately returns to his greasy keyboard, haltingly pecking out letters to the editor about these darn deficits, or wall street crooks, or corruption in congress. Once and for all folks....We have met the enemy and he is us....

Oh my God, Evan Newmark for president! I can't find a word to disagree with. The american people are responsible for the political leadership that has sold seedcorn for today's lunch for a generation, are responsible for living beyond their means on imaginary money, and are responsible for embracing the moral nihilism that made the rest possible. Because of my merciful nature, I don't want them to necessarily reap the whirlwhind they deserve (and so support TARP and related measure) , but I sure as hell am sick of the pitchfork and torch parades..... My fantasy fireside chat for when we get a real president.....Shut up, work hard and save, teach your kids obedience, buy ammo, and btw....never again elect a guy who writes 3 autobiographies before he's ever had a real job.

Thanks for the link to the audio recording. What is most amazing is that it was recorded in 1998, over ten years ago.

i am wondering if we aren't just reliving the early 20th century. with almost all of the same issues. again, with just a few changes. now we are the super power as opposed to back then. and we are the biggest economy, as opposed to then. threatened by a rising economic power (back then that was us). and our political landscape looks very much like it did then. and economically we are similar too. just saying it looks very similar

Maybe GS should save the bonuses for a rainy day. But GS doesn't have to because the US taxpayer will always bail them out. Wish my business was that lucky but than I am not a bank holding Co.

@danm:

Very eloquently put. Some dangerous memes have taken hold in the culture that are dangerous not because they are dark and evil but because they aren't working and that simple fact is not widely understood.

I'm guilty of trotting out the old chestnut about getting the gov't we deserve, but that saying really does oversimplify. In taking greater responsibility for ourselves we need to account for our limitations. I'm hopeful that behavioral economics will eventually provide useful policy tools in that regard.

The article in my opinion takes the position that being anti-Goldman is populist such as when there was talk of putting a windfall tax on the oil companies. Now that was populist.

Goldman is different. The ire is coming from people that would typically being anti-populist. The ire is coming from both socialists and libertarians.

I wrote a post this morning about the shift of the anti-Goldman sentiment from the blogosphere to mainstream media.
