Friday Night Jazz Paul McCartney Live
Over the course of seeing concerts the past 3+ decades, I have had the good fortune to attend shows that were recorded and later distributed on CD/DVD a handful of times.
Up until recently, the most memorable was Aimee Mann’s Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
But this summer, I was lucky enough to attend Paul McCartney at Citi Field (as well as experience the Spontaneous Crowd Chorus).
I went to the Friday night show straight from work. The show was terrific, and I was thrilled to see it release as a reasonable priced set: Paul McCartney: Good Evening New York City is 2 CDs + 1 DVD for $14.
As a huge Beatles fan, I avoided seeing earlier McCartney shows as they were mostly solo/Wings material. As you can see from the tour de force set list, it is heavily weighted with Beatles tunes. From the opener Drive My Car, followed by Jet, you can see a lot of thought went into the list. If there is any weakness, it is a run of 4 non Beatle tunes wedged between Blackbird and Eleanor Rigby. The rest of the list is outstanding.
The show itself was terrific — a full two and half hours — McCartney was in great voice. The songs surprised in their freshness, the stage presentation was classic old school, but it worked really well. McCartney is the consumate performer, and he showed that at age 67 (WTF!) he can still rock with the best of them.
If I have any complaints about the DVD, it is the director never seems to let the camera linger anywhere for more than a few seconds. Sometimes less cutting, and more continued footage is more.
For Beatles fans, or those whose kids want to get to know the band, this is a great place to start.

Sounds good for Beatles Fans…really good.
I’m still pushing Daryl’s House….for a good time. I just never was a huge Beatles fan (although I like McCartney who has stayed on) …and I’m from that era and love the lyrics and what they did for PEACE… Bad on me… But, some of your posters might like this one. If they want a good Friday Night “Unplugged.” Rock & Roll and Dancin’ in the STREETS…

Gladys Knight offers up a moving, sophisticated tribute to honor great artists who influenced her so deeply,
October 4, 2006
By Matthew G. Sherwin
This CD represents Gladys Knight’s latest effort to move in new directions while she pays tribute to some of the greatest musical artists who ever came before her. The result is a beautifully prepared and touching tribute album with lush musical arrangements, Gladys in excellent form and a certain emotional experience that is rather difficult to put into words.
The CD opens strong with “Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me.” This song with its beautiful musical arrangement draws in the listener and leaves them already very hungry for more. Gladys is very precise about where she accentuates a syllable and where she lets words slide more gracefully. “The Man I Love” follows; this is a timeless classic and a personal favorite of mine because it is so romantic. As Gladys says, this type of classic will never die. It is too pure, too pristine and too universal to ever leave us.
Other songs I particularly like on this CD include “God Bless The Child;” Gladys’ beautiful rendition of “This Bitter Earth” which was made famous by Dinah Washington; “Someone To Watch Over Me” which highlights the universal human need for love and protection; “But Not For Me” with its mournful longing for a special someone to enter her life; the romantic “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “Stormy Weather” which was made famous by Lena Horne in the MGM movie entitled Cabin In The Sky.

I have to admit to being a 50 something 60s rock aficionado — Beatles/Stones/Who were great, but I nver got into the solo work from Roger/Mick/Paul.
I have heard good things about these discs . . .

EYES ROLL….I dunno Barry…I feel like I was at a party where the “In Crowd” peeked in door and left because it was just too DAMNED QUIET…..
Your Contrary Views would seem to say if 2000 folks “come and go” and only a couple of people stopped by to “pay respects” then it’s like a funeral…for someone who died that no one cared for and they pop in…tip the hat..and leave fast. They don’t even bother to sign the Guest Book.
Whatever….

Barry already did that….but for the guest stopping by who missed it ….it’s quite a watch. It’s enough liveliness for Friday to watch that one! And maybe the most important news of this snoozy week.

BTW, BR…
It might just be a quiet Friday with folks exhausted from it all and folks stopping by just to see “what’s goin’ on.”
There’s an old Temptations song about “What’s Goin’ On.” But, if I get the link I’ll lose my post here. It’s on You Tube..if anyone is interested. All exhausted….and time to take a break….just stoppin’ by…

BR – Access is just another example of the joys of living in NYC – I always liked the loge seats at Carnegie Hall. Took my wife to see the Byrds/Flying Burrito Bros there on the way to points east and west. Paul has an amazing book to choose from. Dont want to start trouble but in the r&r sphere whos catalog compares? Neil Diamond fans will be shot on sight. cat

I’m going to go ahead and say it: I like Paul’s post-Beatles stuff. Not as much as George’s, but still.
