Sony Bravia LCD/Blu-ray Combo: $850 (free delivery)

The TV in the bedroom — the one we got as a wedding present 17 years ago — started giving out a month or two ago. Its now in its final death throes. We should really put her out of her misery, and put her down . . . Its the humane thing to do.

This gave me an excuse to upgrade to a decent size flattie. Left to my own devices, I can go a little over the top. The bosslady makes me keep it modest and and reasonably priced.

I stumbled across this combo on Amazon (it was also on sale at J&R) — and it fit what we needed perfectly:

Sony Bravia V-Series KDL-40V5100 40-Inch 1080p LCD Flat Panel HDTV & Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray Disc Player Bundle

Total price: $853.00 + including free shipping

I thought that was a good deal for a bedroom set (where I prefer not to watch hi-def movies  or sports).  I’ll move the Blue-ray player to the den, where it will keep company with one of my favorite toys, and I’ll use the regular DVD in the bedroom.

I ordered the Sony combo  last night . . .

Why ISN’T it for high def movies? It says HD and it’s 1080P. Just wondering . . . I’m in a modest shopping mood myself.

It’s pricey for not having High Def and Sports. ???? I guess the “split off for Blu Ray” made it worth it?

How could a 50″ be so expensive and not have High Def?

BTW your post is interesting since we haven’t upgraded, yet. Not wanting to see the MAN IN THE ROOM in FULL SCREEN looming over our bed… (actually…we’ve never had a Tee Vee in our bedroom…) so we are sort of out of touch with that…but most folks we know do have Tee Vee on from room to room and wake and go to bed by it. We have 4 cable linked TeeVee’s in our house, though. The one in the Kitchen where we cook get’s the most usage. I guess it’s all different strokes for different folks. We’ve been thinking of limiting our cable to two of them..because it’s really FR and Kitchen we watch the most…and we pay for the others.

    But…whatever floats your boat when you are in your bedroom. :rolling eyes: :-;

  3. Barry Ritholtz Says:

Not a technology thing, but a marraige tihng.

What I meant was its bad to turn the matrimonial bedroom into a den. Hence, my usage was that I won’t be watching hi def movies and/or sports on this — but I could.

    I’ll fix above

  4. TakBak04 Says:

LOL’s….are you saying your wife watches PBS and News and doesn’t need Hi Def? ….Never Mind…I don’t want to know further…and you didn’t say more about what your wife watches that doesn’t need Hi Def…(I suspect…whatever it is…I would agree with her) again…chuckles….but really what goes on in your bedroom isn’t our business… except you DID sort of throw the question out there about not needing “Hi Def” in bedroom…

Taking that Big Picture thing kinda literally? Doing your bit to encourage a little discretionary consumer spending?

I have a couple of SONY Bravias…generally like them. Mine are about 2 years old, but the following may apply to you:

    1) As you might watch Bloomberg and CNBC a lot, you may notice the ticker stutters…it will drive you nuts. Turn of CineMotion…that will fix it.

    2) I didn’t like the auto backlight adjustment…turned it off. I use standard picture for normal TV viewing.

    3) LCDs aren’t supposed to have burn-in…yet my mom’s 32 inch burned in where the sidebars display for 4:3 pictures. Haven’t seen it on the 40 inch though.

    4) To clean the screen without smudging, get the Monster cleaner at BestBuy…it comes with a terry-like fiber cloth. Clean about 1/4 of the screen at a time with very little cleaner sprayed into the cloth…wipe in a circular motion until all the cleaner is evaporated. If there are still smudges or streaks, polish them away with a microfiber cloth used for camera lenses. Don’t use household window cleaners or paper towels.

Never been a fan of TVs in bedrooms. That’s the place to unplug, unwind, get away from electronic media.

That said, this would be a nice addition to my den.

I died laughing because this reminded me of the lasts shred of respect I hadfor the business section being smothered.
Not the topic, just that this was the front page of the biz section and it has no business in it. Read it you’ll see, nothing about HD market,Tech, plastic surgery cost or internet delivery. Nothing butt skin pores.

    BR,
42″ LG TV’s are going for $500 range. LG is pretty good.

  12. CTX Says:

wouldnt you be better off with a Plasma tv? isnt the picture better plus if your stting at an angle the pic is better, plus are the prices similar? (new consumer reports has some good deals, note Panasonic)

  13. I-Man Says:

Damn fine counter cyclical score, son…

  14. berghie Says:

    Barry,

Let me help you save some $$$. Bring up bing.com , click on shopping and then search for “Sony Bravia V-Series KDL-40V5100″, and you’ll see that 23 vendors are selling it. You will see better prices than Amazon for starters, and even better yet, you can get Bing Cashback. That amount will depend on the vendor, but from my first glance, you’ll be able to save a benjamin on your Amazon cost, if you factor in Amazon’s sales tax. It would appear Butterfly might be a decent choice, and they say it is a new one too. Online shopping combined with Bing cashback can be a beautiful thing.

    Cheers…

    Berghie

BR: Its an excuse to get both the tv and the blue-ray — plus, many of the other web stores charge $79 or higher for for shipping, and I am very comfortable with Amazon.

PS I dont do Bing, mileage programs, or cash back stuff — its too time consuming releative to the money saved

  15. changnao Says:

Personally not a big fan of the Bravia, tend to be overpriced for the quality. I believe Samsung now actually does all their LCD manufacturing anyway.

  18. triplec Says:

Just bought a 32 inch lcd .. what I don’t get is the older crt tv is much better at dealing with a standard def signal. To much blur on our new tv and we have no plans to upgrade to hd.. It would be nice if we could find a store that sells tv’s for sd instead of hd. I miss our old tv.

  19. kblasi Says:

    Kudos to the Kuro

It may well be my future favorite toy also, either after we move and have a suitable location for it, or perhaps a bit sooner, if the circa ’92 27″ Sony TANK at last utters “no mas”. That thing is a beast though, so I suppose it’ll be the move that comes first.

  20. wdeluca Says:

Barry, friends don’t let friends buy lcd over today’s Panny Plasmas :) I’m honestly kind of surprised you didn’t end up with a 46″ Panasonic s10, G10 (or for a bit more $, a v10) given how web savvy you are. Did you get a chance to browse the avsforum.com boards before pulling the trigger? The consensus over there for the past year has pretty much been: panasonic plasma = best picture, best value, best customer service etc.

(n.b. if price is important, check out the slickdeals.net forums – they’re one of the best/easiest places to find/be alerted of deals. If it’s not, then the superior picture quality will more than make up for the hassle of returning the sony ;)

  21. Y ask Y Says:

not the greatest deal br. bought a 46″ a couple months ago, exact same model for $950 + free Playstation 3 250gb. sold the ps3 for 350 on ebay, final cost: 600.

  22. Barry Ritholtz Says:

I checked out the Panasonic Vieras — there was a good sale at AMZN, and I loved the iPod interface — but its a model that is scheduled to be replaced shortly, so I decided not to go that way.

I have the Plasma for serious viewing — I wanted to check out the LCD for the bedroom — and if I hate the set, it will go out East to the inlaws beach house

  23. Rikky Says:

just to give you people some context, i bought an earlier 40″ sony bravia 1080p set in october of 2007 for $1800 at costco, a deal of $200 off the closest competitor. i just picked up the same blu ray player for $200 at pc richards. to think if i would’ve waited 2 1/2 years i could’ve gotten both for $1150 less!

  24. torrie-amos Says:

i shopped em all hard in december, the bestbuy guys suggested a technical set up that cost 200 bucks, they showed the procedure and the diference in picture quality, after all it was said and done, i had a headached and passed, lol, that want need thing, i want yet what i got aint’t broken yet

Best Buy sales people are sleazy — I don’t believe anything they say

  27. Vikram Says:

oh well. I spent Rs. 65,000 (~$1400 on current exchange rates) on a 40″ Bravia here in Bangalore. And I had to go pick it up myself. Enjoy the TV!

  28. ashpelham2 Says:

Agreed that Best Buy blows. I bought an LG 32 inch there on November 15, had such terrible service, and pissy checker outer, that I brought the TV back a week later on principle alone. Went across the street to HH Gregg, a place I’d never been before, and b0ught the same tv for 50.00 less. Hey, it’s a tank and a half of gas in a 2001 Acura TL with 181,000 miles.

Talk about deflation: man, tv prices are dropping so fast, it’s unclear as to when the right TO buy one really is. What’s a 32 inch LG 720p go for now? $75.00 bucks? I gave $500.00, 13 months ago.
