Brilliant idea from the folks at logomyway — hold a contest for the redesign of the BP Logo.

They want to communicate 3 things through the Logo design:

1. Oil spill disaster – Toxic
2. Death of wildlife
3. Incompetence

Many of these results are, not surprisingly, quite clever and witty. Here are a few of my favorites:

    BR,

    btw, do you remember http://www.wackypackages.org/index.php http://www.wackypackages.org/stickers/8th_series/std_small_smaller_images.html ?

Logo/Brand, truly, a knife that can cut both ways..

For readers not familiar with the source of the design ashpelham2 mentions, it’s a famous Vietnam War photo:

An apt metaphor for our economic addiction to petroleum – agreed, brilliant stuff.

Reading through some of the others on the site:

    “Best Pollution”

#116 is evil – of course it made me laugh

    #124 – clever

    Also like #13

My favorite is probably #45 (first one on Barry’s picks)

Here in the SF Bay Area, the Arco stations are owned by BP and until recently all the Arco pumps had a small BP logo on them. When I stopped to buy gas at the local Arco a few days ago, there were no BP logos anywhere.

FWIW, Greenpeace has been running a similar rebranding contest for quite a while…

Yeah, they’re incompetent. Yeah, they suck. Yeah, they befouled the beaches. Yeah, they did not so smart stuff on the Deepwater Horizon.

    OK.

    Now, fix it.

You try capping a well 1 MILE UNDER SEA LEVEL. Let us know how many tries it takes you to get it right.

Might actaually be eaier to send men to the moon and bring them back alive than to cap a deep drilled well 1 mile below the surface of the sea. How many of these logo designers have ever been on a boat — even a mile off shore?

This is not easy stuff — Obama’s approval ratings hit new lows after he said: “just cap the damn well” — yes sir, no problem, sir. Here’s your cap, and your air tank. Good luck, sir.

    Barry,

I thought you were considering a new logo…

I thought the people who want and know how to drill would also know how not to fuck up so they can’t fix it.
Mind you, the oil biz does not have a helicopter named Ben to plug the hole, I give you that.

Perhaps, then, they should not have drilled it in the first place.

Why not just say, “you try driving a school bus 120 mph on the Pacific Coast highway, blindfolded, during an earthquake.” ?

I’d prefer BP be re-branded as “beyond petroleum,” rather than “beyond prosecution,” which seems to be their mission statement de jour.
