Don Was has been the Rolling Stones record producer since Voodoo Lounge in 1994. He discusses the remastered version of Exile on Main Street Remastered version.

NPR:

“When Exile on Main Street was first released nearly 40 years ago, few expected it to gain recognition as a masterpiece. Though the album was a commercial success, a number of critics thought it was too ragged. Some panned it completely. But it’s since become one of the most influential and adored rock albums of all time, thanks to its raw sound and free-spirited exploration of different styles, from country and blues to soul and gospel.

This week, Universal Records is releasing a remastered version of Exile on Main Street that includes a bonus disc of alternate versions of select songs, as well as previously unreleased tracks. The Rolling Stones brought on producer Don Was to scour the old Exile master recordings for lost gems. Some of the rediscovered songs needed mixing, while others needed entirely new lyrics and vocal tracks. On this edition of All Songs Considered, Was talks about how he picked the songs, how they were produced and the lasting impact of the now-legendary album.”

    Best rock album ever.

But its rawness is its virtue. Doubtful that a remastered version can be an improvement on the original, or more likely, the opposite.

Reportedly, Keith Richards is in the latter camp.

I still have the original vinyl double album from 1972 plus a rather disappointing CD version from the early 1990′s.

Any other Exiles out there with opinions on the new master?

I saw the Stones in Indianapolis when they were on tour promoting Exile. Still some of my best memories. I’ve got the vinyl, I’ve got the CD, I’ve got a birthday in a week and a half…

Isn’t it great when the PR people come up with — “this is the best-recorded album of all time — so we improved it by remastering.

Far from my favorite work by the glimmer twins.

Just rec’d my fresh vinyl copy of “Exile”. So sweet. I can hear details missing from my 35+ year old copy. Don’t care about the leftover stuff from when they created a 2 lp set, the album rocks. So happy to get a fresh copy.

Very COOL…Stones are a Fave…Jagger.. well….to keep going all these years…amazing! Nice price from Amazon, too.

Some of my taste, these dayst houg,h is more “humanistic/retro,” rather than Mick’s “in your face cool.” I love that 80′s “Soul Fusion” music translated. And my taste the dark times goes back to the Rhythm & Blues and Soul Fusion of that time from the best of the songsters, imho.

It soothes my soul so I don’t have to get on those “meds” that are advertised that cause all those disagreeable “side effects.” ;-)’s

Cool watch…food and stuff and memories and good music, here…for folks seeking quieter sensory sounds in these dark times:

Did I get put on the “moderate” list?

  9. Transor Z Says:

Apparently not… why is the refrain to Sweet V1rginia getting caught in your sp@m filter?

You got to scrape the sh1t right off your sh0es.

  10. Les Lofton Says:

First heard many of these songs on the jukebox on many nights in a college bar in Oberlin, Ohio. Not hi fidelity, but really loud with lots of beer and other mood enhancers. It’s impossible to listen to without moving about and reaching for a drink these thirty eight years later.

Let hope it’s not one of THOSE mondays….

  13. maynardGkeynes Says:

This remaster of Exile On Main St is just too compressed, even though engineered by Bob Ludwig, whose work I usually like. It sounds fine on computer speakers but you just can’t crank it on a real stereo system without getting digital glare. Average RMS Power about -11dB. Dynamic Range has been shot to bits! The loudness wars latest victim.
