Autoblog:

The vast majority of humanity will never get to ride shotgun with Jeff Zwart as he raises hell on Pikes Peak with his Porsche 911 Cup racer. That’s a damn shame, too. Zwart just managed to set the Time Attack 2wd Class record with a staggering 11:31.095, bending the laws of physics, time and space to his very will in the process.

Watch for the transition from clean pavement to dangerous, dirt covered mountain road . . .

That’s real driver control of a maching meeting nature. Fantastic!

That was cool. But why was he riding with his visor open? And why does the steering wheel seem so loose (a lot of turning required)?

The video from osbjmg was more scary. I was waiting for that guy to go sailing over the edge a few times. And how about the parts where the driver had to hold his hand up to block the sun while steering with the other hand? He didn’t appear to slow down. Whew.

Why did he have his visor open? It was probably a hot day. In a closed car, I almost alway drive with an open visor – in can get quite hot inside a closed-face helmet.

The steering seems “loose” because the driver is driving on the limit, constantly sliding around the corners and making continuous minute steering corrections. This becomes more dramatic on the dirt portion of the route since the tires are operating at greater slip angles and require much more steering correction to maintain the desired line.

amazing. It got pretty hairy there when he got into the dirt. It looked like he was heading over the edge there a few times

Just another day at the office for Mr Vatanen on the clip submitted by osbjmg. He won World Rally Championship once and Paris-Dakar race four times. I do not know about any death wish but he did serve as member of European Parliament after his racing career.
