Tony Blair’s Journey UPDATED

I am trying (as a stateside NYer) to wrap my head around these (hilarious) photos from a Facebook group called Subversively. Apparently, these Brits have been photographing Blair’s autobiography in “mischievously proper” book store sections, then posting it to the FB group. Subversively is now 10,000 members strong and growing.

After the weekend post, quite a few readers shared their less than enthrallment with Mr. Blair (discussed here).  A few did call the book a “surprisingly good read.”

However, I found some “deplorably disaffected members of the British public” puzzling over where his memoirs are best displayed for sale.

As the following photos off of Facebook (Hat tip Richard) show, merely placing the book in the “Crime” section seemed too boring. So they tried the following:

Tragic Life Stories

Subversively 1

Where’s Wally

Subversively 2

Gentle Tissue

Subversively 3

The Brits seem to be less than pleased with Mr. Blair’s rule . . .

As a Brit, I can understand that. Blair got voted in by a landslide (more than once) on the hope/promise that he’d change the direction of the country. He wasted it by spending his time triangulating (Clinton-style), doing little to curb the excesses that had build up under the Conservatives, and showing no real foresight/leadership on the really big matters (Iraq/Financial Crisis/etc — Kosovo is the one standout exception to this).

At the end of the day, for someone who had the largest majorities in British history, what did Blair achieve?
In the pantheon of successful PMs; Churchill/Thatcher changed the direction of the entire country, Blair fiddled around with things (schools/hospitals/etc) without effecting any meaningful change and you can argue he got the big decisions of his tenure wrong (Iraq/FC). Couple that with a holier/smarter/more important than thou nature/PR-job and you’ve got everything that rubs Brits the wrong way.

PS. The closest US-equivalent I can think of is — imagine how Obama would be viewed, if he had 65+ Senate seats, 100+ majority in Congress and after 8years his main “achievements” were the Consumer Finance Bill and sending more troops into Afghanistan. Then overlay British sarcasm/personality onto that view, and you get why Blair is seen as he is in the UK.

I wish I had more insight into the British electorate’s mindset — but I am still grappling with US politics, which is also beyond my ken . . .

Hmmm, how about a copy in the audio video department?

Another one would be at the gun counter

Maybe one at the gold sales window
