One of the benefits of being an “outsider” in a field is you don’t know what’s a stupid question, so you ask it anyway. I’d say at a guess three out of four times your question actually isn’t stupid which is not a bad hit rate and either way you learn something.
The problem of course comes when – without sounding to Rumsfellian – your not sure what your supposed to know and what your not supposed to know. On those occasions it help if you’ve had a liquid lunch :)
