Best one I remember about the firm is Barron’s cover piece- with quite a long article inside- about how great the potential was for the firm- thanks to the Internet, this embarrassment of a piece is still there:

“Bear has long defied doubters who say it lacks the firepower to compete against Morgan Stanley, Goldman, Merrill and the major banks. Assuming that it emerges healthy from the current financial tumult, it will have the luxury to decide whether to remain independent. A sale looks like a better bet than it did a few months ago. But either way, shareholders could win.” August 13, 2007

No evidence that Dick Bove’ wrote it.

At least, they had a question mark on the cover. I guess that counts as outstanding insight in the festering swamp of pus that we call the “business press” …

In any case, a piece of advise for all CEOs and “leaders” out there and a personal version of the magazine contrarian indicator : if you ever see your face on the front page of glossy magazines with nice words for you, it means your run of good luck is over and it’s time to run for cover.
