The percentage of people in federal and state prisons for drug offenses is less than 20% – most people in prison are there for violent crimes. As of 2002, 10.8% of prisoners were in for drug possession (any drug). The percentage of people in state prisons for possession of any amount of marijuana is some small fraction of that.
