With Thanksgiving coming up this week, I guess its time to start thinking about gifts for loved ones or yourself. I’m a big fan of the Panasonic Lumix with Leica lens line of compact cameras — we’ve discussed them many times over the years (most recently, here). Amazon is having a one day half price sale on their higher end line of DSLM cameras (Digital single-lens reflex) — they are nicely priced and garner good reviews. A comparable Nikon or Canon typically runs 50% more in price similarly configured under normal circumstances.

Today, Amazon is running a one day sale, and it looks to be a damned good one: These two Lumix DSLM cameras are on sale at a terrific price of 50% off.

The one I just ordered for my wife is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 (with 12 MP Micro 4/3 Compact System Camera with 3-Inch Touchscreen LCD and 14-42mm Zoom Lens); its normally $549.99, but Amazon has it for $279.99 — it is a steal for a touchscreen, fully configured DLSM.

I’ll spare you the superlatives — you can check out the details at Amazon or see these reviews at Digital Photography, Photography blog and C/NET.

If you want to step it up to something bigger, badder, and bulkier, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2(16.05 MP Live MOS Interchangeable Lens Camera with 3-inch Free-Angle Touch Screen LCD and 14-42mm Hybrid Lens) is pretty bad ass camera. Its normally $999.95, but today only its $499.99, Details are at Amazon, and reviews here and here.

Barry , Why thank you for the heads up. Just ordered. Now is it going to be for me or my husband?

Ditto, thanks for the heads up!

Just how good is that Lumix? should i buy one for my wife?

  4. I bought the less expensive one for my wife – Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 at $279 it’s a steal. She asked for a DLSM camera, and I showed her that before buying it.

The $500 one (Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2) is a legitimate low cost competitor to the Canon & Nikon that cost much, much more. If I had unlimited budget, I’d get a Nikon ($2000).

If your wife is a serious photographer but wont let you drop 2 large on a camera, get the GH2. But unless she is a real photo bug, at $279, with reviews this good (See Digital Photography and Photography blog) its tough to beat the bang for the buck you get GF3.

The GF3 just arrived, and the box was missing the USB cable and shoulder strap. Anyone else having this problem?

Lariat1 was your camera complete with all accessories? Thanks, and have a great Thanksgiving.
