    The long-standing problem with Microsoft has always been that it’s overstretched. It wants to be both an enterprise solution and a consumer one.

    I attended on of their job fairs recently, and that impossible coupling was obvious. The MSFT employees jumped and hooted about how the company is all about fun. Then we talked with the recruiters who solmenly discussed all the military business they have.

    These are mutually exculsive pursuits. You can’t be Apple and Lockheed at the same time.

    Ballmer fell prey to this impossible conglomeration, as will the next MSFT CEO. Unless they split the company into two parts, it will always be all thumbs.
