I work in a basic research lab, and from what I can tell, the microbiome will probably blow away genetics in terms of the impact on health and lifespan. To be fair, much of the work on the microbiome involves genetic sequencing, but the fundamental idea that we are an incredibly rich and diverse community comprised of thousands of different organisms and that health and disease often are the result of balance or imbalance in that community is what is key here.

I am not an investor (other than in a retirement plan), but if I was, I’d be watching this field very carefully.

Agreed. As we depart the era of relatively effective and affordable antibiotics, the microbiome is one arena where I believe answers will be found to the inevitable increase in disease and dangerous infections.

It’ll be all the more interesting because it suggests a lot of treatments that aren’t exactly pharmaceutical in the way we think of drugs now. Once the idea gains steam, there will be a lot of quackery and folk science with those who were before taking your money for pimping the natural diet of the month will instead be offering to try to recolonize your gut with the germs of a skinny person.

If you missed it, Michael Pollan’s article in the NYT magazine was great. I confess I found the video above a little childish.
