Senate: Which Groups Are We At War With? Admin: That’s Classified

The Senate’s Committee on Foreign Relations held a hearing today on renewing the Authorization for the Use of Force (AUMF) in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Senators repeatedly asked representatives from the Department of Defense which groups we are at war with.  And the DOD refused to answer.

As the ACLU’s deputy legal director and director of the ACLU’s Center for Democracy (Jameel Jaffer) tweets:

Senate: Which groups are we at war with? Admin: That’s classified.

— Jameel Jaffer (@JameelJaffer) May 21, 2014

In response, people tweeted how Orwellian this is:

@JameelJaffer @trevortimm Either Oceania or Eastasia, I think.

— Steven Bellovin (@SteveBellovin) May 21, 2014

@JameelJaffer @ggreenwald “We have always been at war with [classified].”

— Jay Schiavone (@jaytingle) May 21, 2014

@JameelJaffer: Senate: Which groups are we at war with? Admin: That’s classified…” Prob b/c we supportAl Qaeda even as we ‘fight’ them.

@JameelJaffer don’t ask who, or why. It’s your job to Clap Louder!

— Patrick Brennan (@pmbrennan) May 21, 2014

And noted that normal Americans may not be immune:

@JameelJaffer @Popehat easy list: US Veterans, Teachers, Police, Firefighters, Gun owners, Capitalists, Casual Pot users…..

I suspect they also have to say “that’s classified” when there is no official answer; i.e., there is no coherent enemy and/or we don’t have a clue who we are currently at war with but whoever they are we think they are shooting at us or will soon.

    Also we need more money.

Finance is the ultimate war zone, it is everywhere. no blood on TV, everybody, but everybody and anything is in, there is no side and the arms an ammunitions are endless and you will have one. At the end of the day there are less and less winners.

Yes crazy people use twitter, that is for that important update,

    Aliens use twitter too?

  4. ilsm says:

If DVA patient “wait data” were “classified”, the careerists managers would get away with fraud and abuses like the pentagon has for decades.

Used to be to protect ships from loose lips.

Now it is to protect crooks.

There isn’t enough PAC money from disabled veterans to deliver needed care.

The Defense Department on these matters acts as a surrogate for the White House and State Department.. Both cabals have figured out that the large majority of inhabitants (citizens is a term that does not begin to describe our current population) are not paying attention to any outrage the current administration fosters. Media is complicit in glossing over the gaffes of the Party in power.

In short, the inhabitants do not give a crap about anything unless it impacts their access to electronic media and social networks.

I thought congress had to declare ‘war’. I don’t think that even happened during the Vietnam ‘conflict’. I could be wrong, But isn’t the answer ‘no one’, because we have not declared ‘war’ on anyone that I am aware of. We shoot kill maim destroy lots of structures/people, but I don’t think that it is officially ‘war’. Have congress completed abdicated this important responsibility? Or am I remembering civics class incorrectly?

    @ Expert
I would add – sex, drugs and rock and roll to that list of social media you have suggested.
As long as we as a nation continue to anesthetize ourselves in our pleasure domes the inhabitants won’t give a damn. When the ‘conflict’ hits our shore – it will be too late.
And – as I read through the scriptures what became abundantly clear to the Israelites in the O.T. was the fact that their enemies need not fight them with weapons – the enemy only need surround and starve the inhabitants within their own walls. I have to ask – is this the very thing that is going on here in Amerika these days?
    Be well.

Yes, it sounds silly, but I suspect that in this day and age, with our enemies being hundreds of shifting religious, ethnic and nationalist splinter groups, discretion is probably the best course. The enemy of our friend might be the friend of our friend tomorrow, and therefore not at someone with whom we are at war.

When asked with who we are at war, the representatives of the Department of Defense might well have looked at their watches and replied: “Well, that depends what time it is. The list we had last night would already be out of date this morning.”
