About Barry Ritholtz

Barry L. Ritholtz attended Stony Brook University on a Regents Scholarship, where he focused on Applied Mathematics and Physics. He was a member of the Stony Brook Equestrian Team, and in 1981, Mr. Ritholtz successfully competed in the National Championships of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.

He wrote a column for the campus weekly, "The Stony Brook Press," on National Affairs, and was elected Vice-President of the student body. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science, a concentration in Philosophy, and more-than-enough mathematics for the demands of market analysis.

Mr. Ritholtz performed his graduate studies at Yeshiva University's Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York, where he focused on Economics, Anti-Trust and Corporate Law. In addition to being a member of the Law Review, he graduated Cum Laude.

Looking for greater challenges, he headed to Wall Street. As a trader and an analyst, he studied how the intersection of Sentiment, Monetary Conditions, Trend, Market Internals, Macro-economics and Contrary Indicators, could help determine investment risk levels. Most recently, Mr. Ritholtz was Chief Market Strategist for Maxim Group, a New York Investment bank, managing over $5 Billion in clients assets.

In 2006, Ritholtz Research was launched. Using his proprietary Market Timing Model -- which consists of the application applies numerous elements, including  Sentiment, Monetary, Quantitative, Valuation, Technical, and Trend to determine the risk versus reward ratio of the equity markets within a Macro-Economic framework.

The firm’s investment posture -- Long, Neutral, or Short -- is based on the model's risk assessment. Applying his model to the broader investing environment, Mr. Ritholtz also writes regular Market Commentary for institutional clientele, as well as to all manner of print and electronic media.  He also teaches a course on America's Economy for NYU's School of Cont'd & Prof Studies.

Mr. Ritholtz is a frequent guest on CNBC, where he has been guest host of Squawk Box, and is a regular on Kudlow & Company. He has also appeared on Your World with Neil Cavuto, Bulls & Bears, Wall Street Week and is frequent guest on other shows. Mr. Ritholtz was profiled in the Wall Street Journal’s Quite Contrary column (August 3, 2004; Page C3). His perspectives on the markets are quoted regularly in the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, and other print media.

The WSJ cited The Big Picture as “the Economic Blog Insiders Read to Stay Current ("What the In-Crowd Knows);" Barron's Alan Abelson called him a "bright and savvy fellow," while Barron's Electronic Trader calls his work Not Another Blah, Blah Blog, and "Well worth it;"  Business Week (Blogging For Dollars), noted his "insightful calls on the direction of the stock market" – Ritholtz is one of 80 Wall Street Strategists who participates in Business Week's annual market forecast. And Larry Kudlow describes his research as "very helpful -- and addictive."

When not bemoaning the New York Knicks' all-too-frequent offensive lapses, Mr. Ritholtz is a vintage sports car enthusiast. He and his wife Wendy, an artist and teacher, live on the North Shore of Long Island, New York.
